What are the factors that limit human civilisation such that the majority of the world’s citizens live in abject poverty in the midst of vast resources of the earth?
The debate about the finite and infinite nature of natural resources and human need has raged on for centuries. Currently in vogue is the climate change lobby and debates obviously because of the devastating effect it may have on a balanced eco system including global warming. As is always the case there are those who claim these concerns are not well-founded.
A perspective is that human civilisation which now includes space tourism, should be able to eradicate the blight that afflict millions of people in the world in the first place. Some are of the view that for such projects to be thought about and actually implemented in the midst of extreme misery, where billions live in misery and billions of children die each day etc, raises huge question marks about the state and credibility of human civilisation in terms of its ability to provide what is basic to meet human dignity. Others argue that since global leaders have not been able to meet the basic needs of the world’s majority people, they lack the vision, courage and wisdom required of leadership, to guarantee a better world today and a better future. Do you think human civilisation is justified given the afflictions that are upon global citizens or we need new ideas to ensure human dignity?
